Comment:

Yeah, bah, I'm not sure there is much that can be done here. pidgin 2.2.0
and 2.4.0 disagree on what the digest-uri part of the digest response is
supposed to look like. Openfire expects different things when xmpp.fqdn is
set and when it isn't. When it isn't, given my understanding of things,
both pidgin 2.2.0 and openfire are incorrect in the same way. When it is
set, openfire and pidgin 2.4.0 are correct (obviously in the same way),
but pidgin 2.2.0 is still incorrect.

You can turn off digest authentication in openfire, assuming you have
plain authentication on (and are using tls which you seem to be), both
versions of pidgin should work then. You can also build pidgin 2.4.0
without Cyrus SASL support that should have it fall back on the built in
digest code which is likely still incorrect and should work without
 xmpp.fqdn set in Openfire.

For the record both the IETF and the XMPP standards foundation are
deprecating DIGEST-MD5 because it has been plagued by interpretation
problems such as the one that causes this issue (sort of at least).

I'm going to close this ticket because there isn't anything we can do to
fix 2.2.0 and I am convinced that 2.4.0 is correct, feel free to reply if
you have further questions or comments though.
