Comment:

 Is this still an issue in 2.4.0? If 2.4.0 doesn't work you need to figure
 out if your server is supposed to only be offering GSSAPI or whether it
 should be offering more authentication mechanisms or whether it shouldn't
 be offering sasl at all.

 As to why other clients connect:
 Psi, up until recently, didn't use sasl and always used old-style auth
 (which apparently the server accepted).
 iChat may or may not correctly use GSSAPI (or it may do like psi and just
 assume old-style auth).
 pidgin was trying to use sasl and the only presented method was GSSAPI
 (which pidgin/your machine was not set up to use).
