 Okay, I know what the problem is now...

 I installed Pidgin 2.3.1 with GTK+ Runtime (v2.21.1 rev b), and I can have
 japanese characters in my profile.

 Then I installed Pidgin 2.4.0 with GTK+ Runtime (v2.12.8 rev a), and I can
 NOT have japanese characters in my profile.

 So I reinstalled Pidgin 2.3.1 with GTK+ Runtime (v2.21.1 rev b), and then
 reinstalled Pidgin 2.4.0 WITHOUT updating the GTK+ Runtime. Now I have the
 latest Pidgin and I am able to have japanese in my profile. :)
