 Ok, so I solved the issue, but it may be something to store in a knowledge
 base in case it happens again.

 I had installed 2.4.0 from a deb package I got online; when I went to
 install pidgin-dbg to get the backtrace, it said it required 2.3.1, which
 is when I noticed it could be something with compatibilities or
 dependencies. I uninstalled 2.4.0 and installed everything from the Ubuntu
 repositories (with 2.3.1) and now everything works as expected.
