 I know many people who use status messages with the default Available
 status, so it isn't the case that no one does. I don't really see the
 penalty in requiring people to hit Enter if they don't want to wait two
 seconds, which isn't really that long especially considering that logging
 in to the protocols usually takes at least that long (not even counting
 seeing if person X that you want to talk to is online). A preference for
 this really isn't at all the right solution. I sort of like the idea of
 having the entry area pop up if you start typing but think that would
 incredibly hard to discover and discovery is an important feature for
 things like this. As to what use an offline message is, on IRC it is sent
 in the quit message, on XMPP it is sent to all your buddies (and your
 server can even cache it, so people can check it to see why you signed off
 last, etc.). I imagine some of the other protocols do this also but don't
 know about it offhand.
