 this is probably the thing i want most from pidgin. half the time, my
 buddy list contains a vast expanse of empty whitespace that just consumes
 screen area with nothing. of course the other half of the time it is
 nearly full even if i stretch it all the way from my top panel to my
 bottom panel. if the buddy list window could automatically size itself to
 fit its contents i would not have to manually resize it three times a day
 *or* give up a bunch of screen area.

 for those who must have this right away (and who are willing to give up
 the menu bar and the status area at the bottom of the buddy list), i'd
 recommend the pidgin screenlet.
