Comment:

 The old way was not unquestionably better, as indicated by the fact that
 people questioned it. Among the many questions about it was what, exactly,
 the protocol had to do with the status of a buddy and therefore what
 business it had being the status icon.

 I'm closing this as wontfix because we have no intention of moving the
 protocol icons back to the status icon location at any point. (If you
 really want this feel free to use funpidgin, I believe they added this
 just recently.)
