 I have no idea what the actual problem is (things like error messages are
 useful), but Luke's summary is correct.  If dircproxy acts like a standard
 IRC server, Pidgin will work with it; if not, it will not.  If you can
 isolate the problem with dircproxy, we can determine whether fixing it is
 reasonable or not.

 I believe the irssi proxy works, if that helps.
