 I have the same problem. Also Gentoo, but on x86 (32bit). I tried
 upgrading libpng from 1.2.26 (stable) to 1.2.27 (testing) and recompiling
 / relinking pidgin against it, same error.

 Using 2.4.1 for now (no problems with 2.4.1)...
