Comment (by andrikos):

 Of course it is easy to create custom smiley theme, but the point is to be
 able to use the current ones automatically. The current approach is:
 Take the parts from the themes you like, copy-paste them in a new theme
 file and use this new theme.
 This setup, however, cannot be easily updated when new versions of the
 existing themes come out.

 On the other hand, just a small addition to the spec of the theme file to
 allow includes (maybe with a protocol specification) would resolve the
 problem by using parts of the existing ones. Thus, when the original
 themes would be updated, the portions used in the current theme would be
 updated automatically with no need of new copy paste.

 As an example think about two major themes used now:
 [[BR]]
 * Pidgin default
 [[BR]]
 * Original icons
 [[BR]]
 In a system there could be installed both of them, and each user to
 specify just the parts she wants for each one. I am not suggesting new
 options in the preferences part (it can be a new "theme") just support to
 be able to specify a new theme using (automatically) existing ones and
 reflect the changes when the system themes are updated.

 I hope it is a bit clearer now.
