 Pidgin will sometimes connect in the away state if you have chosen for it
 to do so.

 When signing on, all the previous messages sent to you offline are then
 shown ( although pidgin doesn't tag them as such), and then pidgin
 attempts to auto respond with an away message to the senders of the
 offline messages. Specifically this is with AIM as that is mostly what I
 use, but it might affect others.

 I think the official client is able to notice an offline message versus a
 regular one, but i don't know if it auto-responds when away. since I have
 used pidgin exclusively for quite a while now.

 Received offline messages should be marked in some way as being offline,
 and pidgin shouldn't auto respond
