 somehow now search doesnt work

 i start typing in a name and it brings up the first letter, keeps the text
 box open but wont let me type anymore or do anything in the buddy list
 window for a few seconds until it stops.  nothing seems to help.. pressing
 enter doesnt clear.. clicking the text box etc

 whats up?
