 And confirmed - no checkboxes checked in the plug-ins box.

 And correct on the last point.

 Maybe I should just do some clean re-install? I tried re-installing over
 the current version, but it did not help.

 It doesn't bother me -- I never see the added characters -- but my friends
 keep asking me about it. They're seeing them on msges I send them,
 although it tends to begin mid-way into a chat. Not sure what triggers it.
