Comment (by deryni):
I think many of you seriously over-estimate the number of people who are
seeking to use Jabber as such. I feel, and I think the number of times
this sort of issue comes up bears this out, that most people are either
going to know what XMPP is (because they are developers, clueful users,
what-have-you) or are going to know that they want to use Google Talk
(which we have a separate entry for and is already a source of confusion,
search the tickets for this if you want to see that) or LiveJournal or
(soon) Facebook or whoever else is using XMPP for their chat components.
In the former case the name will not be a problem and in the latter case
using Jabber will not help much either. I really think there is a very
small majority of people who are clued in enough to know what jabber is
(that is not just using their social networking sites 'chat' service) and
yet don't know that xmpp is jabber. I also think that is a group we can
more than reasonably hope to target and educate. I have no inherent
problems at this point with using "XMPP (Jabber)" other than that I think
it looks hideously ugly and will be even worse when display in places like
the Accounts menu ("user at server/resource (XMPP (Jabber))") for example.
I also really fail to see how needing to tell people once that "Jabber is
(now) XMPP" is a burden that needs to be lifted. I've done it a number of
times (though the frequency of that has dropped markedly since we first
made the name change which indicates to me that people really do get it
and/or don't care.
Oh, and no, not using Jabber isn't logomachy as Jabber is in fact a
trademark (one that is granted for free usage to the community, but a
trademark nonetheless) and as such avoiding its use is prudent in that the
trademark holder has nothing to do with pidgin in any way, and in fact
sells XMPP clients, servers, and services.
