 I have the same problem, existed in 2.4.1, continues to be a problem in
 2.5.2.  I just updated to kubuntu 8.10, this has been occurring with
 ubuntu 8.04 and is still occurring.  I have been disabling plugins one by
 one (no 3rd party) but it's still occurring.

 Although this will occur in an idle state after an hour or so, messaging
 will rapidly increase VM used, and it is apparently not released.
