 This problem (SCIM can't be activated) happens in all Pidgin dialogs and
 all conversation windows, regardless of conversation protocol.

 Let me clarify that: The only protocol which causes the problem is IRC.
 SCIM can be used when other protocols are active.  But when an IRC account
 is active, the problem occurs in all windows, even non-IRC conversation
 windows.  There's something particular about the Pidgin code for IRC.. :-(
