 In the interest of keeping you breathing, if you set a local address book
 as default (or maybe an LDAP address book that you always have good
 connectivity to?), does this temporarily cure the problem for you?

 The long term solution is to fix the evolution integration plugin to use
 asynchronous lookups, but I haven't got around to finishing that yet.
