#7489: Pidgin doesn't work with speech recognition features in Vista
---------------------------------------+------------------------------------
Reporter: blakeyrat | Owner: lschiere
Type: defect | Status: new
Component: unclassified | Version: 2.5.2
Keywords: speech recognition, vista |
---------------------------------------+------------------------------------
Reproduction:
1) On Windows Vista, turn on Speech Recognition
2) Switch to an open Pidgin chat window
3) Say "start listening" to turn on listening, if it's not already on
4) Say "show numbers" to have Speech Recognition show the list of widgets
it can interact with
5) Click in the message field to focus it
6) Say "I am dictating some text period"
Expected Result:
Every widget in the Pidgin chat window should have a number assigned. The
message field should be appended with "I am dictating some text."
Actual Result:
Only the window frame widgets have numbers assigned, and no text it
appended into the message field.
It would be great to be able to use Vista's built-in speech recognition to
send IMs and otherwise manipulate Pidgin chat window. I don't understand
exactly why it doesn't work, but I'm guessing it has to do with using
"look-alike" widgets instead of standard Windows widgets.
I'd wager this bug presumably also applies to Microsoft Office's speech
recognition in Office 2003 and Windows XP, but I don't have that
configuration available to test.
Attachments:
* The result of "Show Numbers" in a typical application (Firefox.) Notice
how every widget is overlaid with a number, indicating that Speech
Recognition is able to interact with every widget.
* The result of "Show Numbers" on a Pidgin chat window. The Buddy List
window has a similar appearance; only the window controls are numbered.
