 This request is best implemented as a plugin.  Currently we as Pidgin
 developers are not interested in implementing it.  This ticket remains
 open as an invitation for someone to write a plugin fulfilling the
 request.[[BR]]Logs are per conversation. Where a conversation is an
 instance of a conversation window. When disabled the 'Close IMs
 immediately when the tab is closed' preference causes a timeout to exist
 which allows windows that are closed and reopened quickly (a small number
 of minutes later) to re-use the existing log file.

 Plugins are able to add additional logging methods, those methods could
 use one logfile-per-day or any other time period they desired. The only
 logging plugin I am currently aware of is the [pp:wiki:oldlogger oldlogger
 plugin] from the purple plugin pack.
