 however I would share my experience with you

 I had got the same problem.. couldn't connect with msn with proxy
 I modified preferences (general proxy settings) but still got the problem
 and new connection problem came out with other IM accounts.

 So, I modified proxing settings only for MSN account, but still nothing
 ...
 All work fine (strangely!!) after I had checked "Use http method" from
 advance menu of MSN account
