New description:

 I receive the following error after upgrading to Pidgin 2.5.2.
 (I forget the previous version number, but I think it was low 2.x).
 I have rebooted, verified that MSN messenger works, and temporarily all
 sorts of firewalls and virus protection systems. I do not use a proxy.

 "Our protocol is not supported by the server."

 The debug log is:

 {{{

 (10:26:33) connection: Connecting. gc = 01A3E9B8
 (10:26:33) msn: new httpconn (02CE6EE8)
 (10:26:33) dnsquery: Performing DNS lookup for messenger.hotmail.com
 (10:26:33) dnsquery: IP resolved for messenger.hotmail.com
 (10:26:33) proxy: Attempting connection to 144.212.95.87
 (10:26:33) proxy: Connecting to messenger.hotmail.com:1863 with no proxy
 (10:26:33) proxy: Connection in progress
 (10:26:33) proxy: Connected to messenger.hotmail.com:1863.
 (10:26:33) msn: C: NS 000: VER 1 MSNP15 CVR0
 (10:26:33) msn: S: NS 000: VER 1 CVR0

 (10:26:33) account: Disconnecting account 00CA2930
 (10:26:33) connection: Disconnecting connection 01A3E9B8
 (10:26:33) msn: destroy the OIM 01A4C948
 (10:26:33) msn: destroy httpconn (02CE6EE8)
 (10:26:33) jabber: jabber_actions: have pep: NO
 (10:26:33) jabber: jabber_actions: have pep: YES
 (10:26:33) connection: Destroying connection 01A3E9B8
 (10:26:33) util: Writing file accounts.xml to directory
 C:\WINNT\Profiles\arogers\Application Data\.purple
 (10:26:33) util: Writing file C:\WINNT\Profiles\arogers\Application
 Data\.purple\accounts.xml
 }}}

 Thanks for any insignt,
 -alec

Comment:

 I'd wager you're running a firewall such as the one included with AVG
 antivirus, which actively modifies packets coming from the MSN servers.
 Getting rid of that should solve the problem.
