 How are you changing status back to available? If you are using the status
 selector in the bottom of the buddy list then you should see that the
 message remains and can simply hit delete or backspace to remove it.

 If you are changing from the tray icon menu then the status should not be
 staying.

 The status staying in the selector in the buddy list is intentional, it
 makes things easier for people who want to keep the message across status
 changes and incurs only a small penalty for people who don't. Whereas the
 previous method incurred a rather larger penalty for people who wanted to
 keep the message.
