New description:

 Miranda has this, and I loved it because it saves screen space. Here is a
 description on how it should work:

  * The contact list window must resize itself to be just tall enough for
 the scrollbar to dissappear, except that:
  * The contact list height must never exceed the screen height.

 I would like see this feature in both the Linux and Win32 version of
 Pidgin, as I am a happy user of both. Whether this is best solved as a
 plugin or as a built-in feature, I will let someone else decide.

Comment:

 This request is best implemented as a plugin.  Currently we as Pidgin
 developers are not interested in implementing it.  This ticket remains
 open as an invitation for someone to write a plugin fulfilling the
 request.
