 I'll have to correct myself.  It looks like Pidgin 2.5.2 handles the <
 character fine, but Finch 2.5.2 does not.  I'm using a vanilla
 installation of Finch, no plugins loaded at all.  The bug is also present
 in Adium 1.3.2.
