Comment:

 Both /usr/bin/pidgin and /usr/local/bin/pidgin, when run by hand, fail to
 start? Do they both with when run with gdb ("gdb /usr/bin/pidgin" and "gdb
 /usr/local/bin/pidgin")?

 As to which to remove you need to remove whichever version you don't want.
 If you want the package managed version (which I imagine you probably do)
 then you need to remove the one you installed from source, etc.
