Comment:

 If pidgin works as root but not as a normal user it likely means that you
 still have more than one libpurple installed and/or that you need to run
 'ldconfig' as root (though that would likely make it so that you can't run
 pidgin as a user at all, not just that it would look different or crash).

 If you check the properties for the Applications menu item you should be
 able to find out what binary it is actually trying to run (hopefully)
 which will at least tell you if it is trying to run the correct version of
 pidgin.
