 Well, I effectively did an 'rm -rf ~/.purple' and reinitialized
 everything.  This cleared the proxy errors for yahoo, and, quelle
 surprise, the double free no longer occurs.  There must be some old dreck
 in one of the initialization files which caused the proxy errors which
 then propagated to the double free.  I can attach the old .purple stuff as
 a tar-ball, or I can diff files/directories for your perusal.
