Comment:

 It has to be something related to the network configuration - is your
 machine configured to use a different connection profile in some sort of
 connection manager when wired vs. wireless?

 It isn't necessarily the network firewall, it could well be a software
 firewall on your machine.

 Pidgin can't tell how it is connected - it just tries to connect (and in
 the case here, something is just dropping the connection).
