 I'm confused - is there some reason that you can't just use the normal
 copy and paste methods (e.g. right-click copy, paste (or middle click
 paste on X11))?

 Are you talking about dragging text from a different application (e.g. a
 text editor) into a Pidgin Window?  If yes, is this on Windows?
