Comment:

 When I logged in with the official client (AIM 6 on Windows), there were
 no members of the group.

 In Adium (what I use on my laptop), I noticed that the group indeed had
 two members (both of whom appear ''only'' in other groups in AIM 6.0 and
 Pidgin). I moved the members to another group.

 Logged back in to Pidgin and then I was able to remove the group.
