 Shoot.  I disproved my previous theory.  There are those using spark
 clients that update properly in libpurple clients.  My coworker and I have
 been messing around with spark vs libpurple, and haven't been able to
 reproduce it.

 Here's what I'll do:  I come in the office long before most others.  Over
 the course of employees arriving, I don't catch all of them.  I'll just
 start collecting debug data as soon as I come in, then find a contact that
 is online, but not listed as online, then find that chunk of the debug
 log.  I'll post tomorrow with a chunk of somebody not updating.
