 This sounds very odd, I haven't heard of anything like it before.

 Which protocol did this happen with?

 To start "from scratch", you can delete yout `%APPDATA%/.purple`
 directory, but you probably don't need to do that - instead just rename
 `%APPDATA%/.purple/blist.xml` to something else while pidgin isn't
 running.
