Changing groups is not handled correctly. This bug may or may not have
other triggers as well.
Steps to reproduce as of ver. 2.4.1:
1. Connect as an MSN user.
2. Add a new contact to some group.
3. Move that contact to a different group.
4. Disconnect.
5. Reconnect.
6. Observe buddy synchronization error message. Choosing "yes" locally
deletes and re-adds the contact, nuking the alias. Choosing "no" locally
deletes the contact. In both cases, the contact remains unchanged on the
server list.
7. If "yes", or if contact is manually re-added, go to step 4.
Oddly, the contact's group changes seem to be correctly reflected in the
server list, at least as far as I could tell. Adding or moving the contact
to the original group does not correct the issue.
I was only able to solve the problem by logging into mail.live.com and
manually deleting the contact there, after first

Exactly. I have the same problem and it has been around all the way back
to GAIM 1.5 (at least). I doubt the issue has ever been resolved in a
past version.
This is a serious problem for MSN protocol users. It must be a problem
that was never tested for by the developers.
