 I have just build 2.5.1 and it is not crashing when I try to save the
 custom smileys I receive.

 Saving the emoticons is other history, just one frame from the animated
 ones (GIF's) is saved, but it must be because gdkpixfuf limitation. But I
 can confirm that adding manually gif's stored on hard disk is working
 fine, and now I can send those to my contacts who use the official client.
