 no idea if you really did that patch. But for anyone also searching for
 this keyboard shortcut, there's a little goody already built into pidgin:

 Just thought I'd post that here as well. I stumbled upon this in another
 ticket (http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/231) and find it very useful.
