 You haven't really implemented what deryni suggested. You just moved the
 function call. If you actually move the code, you should be able to
 simplify it significantly because 1) you don't need to do all the
 conv/gtkconv variable setup and 2) you should be able to assume that a
 change is happening rather than have a big if statement checking for it.
