 Sorry to write so much, but maybe my first post was... premature.

 I deactivated my ICQ account when I wrote the reply, and now (20 minutes
 later) tried to activate it again.

 Pidgin logs in, and finds my buddies.

 Maybe this error message should make pidgin reconnect after a LONGER
 period than it does currently?
