 i have quit and launched pidgin few times over...

 expand icq buddy and add xmpp buddy - did not stay grouped
 expand xmpp buddy and add icq buddy - did not stay grouped

 icq/xmpp/msn/irc (i have added myself to the buddy list) and xmpp/irc
 (only "grouped" xmpp buddy that is not googletalk) buddies did stay
 grouped after relaunch

 icq/irc/xmpp buddy - icq/irc stayed grouped, xmpp not

 after enabling show offline buddies i have noticed that my icq/xmpp
 buddies which are offline and were offline for quite a long time (at least
 as long as i have upgraded to 2.5.1) stayed grouped
