Comment:

 The network your traffic is being routed through when you're connected to
 the VPN must be more restrictive than your default network connection.

 The native MSN client supports a number of alternate connection methods
 which it automatically falls back to when the default connection method
 fails - Pidgin does not do this.  You may be able to connect by checking
 the "HTTP Method" checkbox in the Advanced options of your MSN account.
