 This sounds to me like the client your friend is using is assuming that
 your client supports the formatting system it does (looks like something
 rtf-based to me) and that once it receives a message from pidgin (which
 indicates that we do not support that formatting) it stops sending the
 formatting. Assuming that is correct, that makes this a bug in the other
 client.

 Does this happen with all of your buddies? Do the buddies it happens with
 use the same client (or version of the client)?
