Comment:

 I think this might not be a valid bug, although I am the reporter. When I
 reported the bug, I had only one icon in the notification area, and the
 sound applet sitting next to it, which I mistakenly assumed was in the
 notification area. Now that I tested my assumption with other icons in the
 notification area, it seems that the current behaviour is the standard
 behaviour.

 This could still be a bug with Pidgin, but it is more likely to be a bug
 with the Gnome notification area itself.

 Closing this bug as invalid ... sorry for the trouble!
