Comment:

 If changing to a non-MS-Windows GTK+ theme fixed it then this is likely
 related to your default Windows font (and is either a real problem or a
 temporary problem). If switching back to the MS-Windows GTK+ theme doesn't
 cause the problem to resurface then I have no idea what the cause is but
 forcing Windows and/or GTK+ to reprobe the default font seems to 'fix'
 whatever it is. If it does resurface and changing the Windows default font
 away and back doesn't fix it (if that does then this is the same as the
 previous sentence) then something else is wrong (possibly in GTK+) and is
 something we should probably investigate.
