 Hi again,

 In trying to follow the instruction to trap a log file I realized that I
 was on version 2.5.o and when trying to load the older log file it didn't
 seem to work. I decided to get the current version (2.5.1) and after
 loading it, my Preferences are now functioning agin. So, though we don't
 have the actual root cause and fix, we can close this ticket as the
 problem is now gone.
