 I understand that the offline message plugin in pidgin doesn't work with
 protocols that apparently support offline message delivery already.
 Understandable, but there are problems with this.

 1. Some XMPP servers do not support offline message delivery even though
 it is in the XMPP spec., so such users are completely out of luck for
 offline message delivery. A big example of this is Google Talk! But there
 are many other XMPP servers out there that don't.

 2. Sometimes such features of a given service are not available. For
 example, ICQ has recently frequently thrown error messages at me like this
 when trying to send a message to an online buddy:

 (23:39:45) Unable to send message: Service unavailable

 In both cases, and probably in others, users are left without the ability
 to send messages to offline buddies, something that the plugin was
 precisely designed to fix: servers that lack such a feature.
