Comment(by kunalashar):

With Pidgin 2.5.5 on Vista Home Premium SP1, reconnect does not seem to
 work at all.

Here's the specific behavior, that's consistently reproducable:
 1. I'm connected to a wireless network that is not behind a proxy
 2. I start up Pidgin, it connects to all my accounts successfully
 3. A few minutes later, my wireless connection goes down for less than 30
 seconds
 4. Pidgin disconnects ***BUT WITHOUT TELLING ME THAT ITS DISCONNECTED***.
That is, Pidgin's icon in the notification tray shows the "Connected" icon
 5. I open Pidgin's window, and sure enough, it has disconnected and the
status shows "Available - waiting for network connection"
 6. The wireless connection returns, and I am able to browse using my
 browser
 7. 5 minutes later, Pidgin ***IS STILL DISCONNECTED*** with the same issue
of the icon showing connected, but the status showing "Available - waiting
 for network connection"
 8. Pidgin has not tried to reconnect with the "random 8-60" seconds
specified elsewhere. It's not tried to reconnect at all. Or if it has,
 it's failed anyway.
 9. All other IMs like Yahoo IM, MSN Messenger etc., were able to
successfully reconnect seconds after the wireless connection was
 reestablished.
 10. I shutdown Pidgin altogether and restart it. The connection is
 reestablished.

Gentlemen, I've tried this every which ways, and the behavior is the same
 - Pidgin does not reconnect.
