 I noticed I did not get the popups. I signed off Trillian and Pidgin, then
 back onto Pidgin and now the issue it gone!

 This works. It seems like a hassle, but it only takes the one time.
 1) Make sure you're actually having this problem (duh)
 2) Download Trillion.
 3) Put in your AIM information and log into Trillion Basic.
 4) At this point, DO NOT sign off of AIM from Trillion OR close it. Open
 Pidgin and let it sign on to AIM.
 5) Close Trillian and Pidgin.
 6) Sign back onto Pidgin and the problem should be completely gone. You
 won't have to repeat this again.
