dependency".. I'm assuming everybody agrees that gstreamer is not really
appropriate for this use case.

Gstreamer is a necessity for us for other features that are in
development. Direct use of gstreamer isn't going away any time soon.
I still don't see a compelling reason to use libcanberra.
