 Yes, some people do use that. But that is irrelevant to the main issue
 here which is that pidgin isn't creating that button, the windowing
 environment is. The only real control pidgin has over the existance of
 that button is the type of window pidgin claims to be, and pidgin is not
 about to start guessing what window types will not have maximize buttons
 (especially as that isn't necessarily going to be consistent across
 environments).

 As a side point I can't even imagine how narrow your buddy list must be in
 order to have this be a problem, how do you see any useful amount of your
 buddies screen names? Is your windowing theme using really large (that is,
 wide) buttons?
