 Right, my question was why you need them in a separate group as opposed to
 simply in a chunk in their existing group. Doesn't moving buddies around
 like this make it incredibly hard to find someone if you need to talk to
 them (especially since there is no particularly good way to ensure that
 the buddy gets put back into the main group in the same location, without
 using Alphabetic sorting or something like that)?

 It should be possible for a plugin to do this, and potentially even to do
 it without involving the server (though that may be asking for trouble,
 I'm not sure. I just don't see the benefit to this and see lots of
 potential cost.
