 While I'm not against the idea in particular, it seems the wrong way to
 solve your problem.
 What about making chats "persistent", (like IRC chats), so that you can
 entirely *hide* them (so they don't clutter up your chatting window
 either). Then, if you ever need them, you can access them from the buddy
 list, where you put them in a special group 'Persistent chats' for
 example.
